IRS Rules for Business Travel Deductions

The IRS allows self-employed individuals and business owners to deduct ordinary and necessary travel expenses when traveling away from their tax home for business. To qualify, the trip must require you to sleep or rest away from home, and the primary purpose of the trip must be business-related. If more than half of your trip days are for business, the trip passes the primary purpose test and transportation costs (flights, trains) are 100% deductible.

For mixed-use trips, lodging and ground transportation are prorated based on the ratio of business days to total days. Meals are always subject to the 50% limitation, even on purely business days. Weekend days between business days generally count as business days if it would be impractical to return home. Keep detailed records โ€” the IRS requires documentation of the business purpose, dates, location, and amounts for every expense.
